Introduction |
The need for protective isolation in USB connectors arises from the USB's original consumer electronics design, which didn't account for industrial environments' challenges such as ground bounce, high noise disturbances, and ground potential discrepancies. Isolating the USB interface is crucial in applications like Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS), where controllers with USB interfaces may be exposed to high voltage. Failure or electrostatic discharge (ESD) incidents on the USB connector could disrupt industrial machinery operations. Galvanic isolation of the USB interface has become essential across various applications, including game consoles, e-meters, data concentrators, power distribution, medical devices, factory automation, motor drives, and in-flight entertainment systems. U2ISO10A1 is a High/Full/Low-Speed Isolated USB Repeater. This galvanically-isolated USB 2.0 compliant repeater supports low-speed (1.5 Mbps), full-speed (12 Mbps), and high-speed (480 Mbps) signaling rates. It incorporates automatic connect and speed detection, reflection of pull-ups/pull-downs, and link power management, enabling seamless integration as a drop-in solution for cable isolation. The device also features automatic role reversal - if after disconnect, a new connect is detected on the Upstream facing port, then the Upstream and Downstream port definitions are reversed. Additionally, the U2ISO10A1 includes inbuilt programmable equalization to counter signal loss due to board traces, ensuring compliance with USB 2.0 high-speed TX and RX eye-diagram templates. The device utilizes a silicon dioxide (SiO2) insulation barrier capable of withstanding up to 5000 V RMS and working at 1500 V RMS.
